Kyler Phillips vs. Marcelo Rojo targeted for UFC 271

Fast-rising bantamweight Kyler Phillips has his next assignment.

MMA Fighting has confirmed with sources with knowledge of the matchup that Phillips (9-2) will fight Marcelo Rojo (16-7) at UFC 271 on Feb. 12, with a location still to be determined. The bout was first reported by ESPN Deportes.

After a 3-0 start to his UFC career that sent him surging up the rankings, Phillips dropped a majority decision to Raulian Paiva in his most recent fight this past July. Prior to that, the 26-year-old prospect scored wins against Song Yadong, Cameron Else, and Gabriel Silva inside the octagon.

Rojo seeks his first UFC win and a return to action after seeing three consecutive bookings fall through (two opponents withdrew and a Sept. 4 meeting with Jonathan Martinez was cancelled when Martinez had complications from his weight cut). The 33-year-old Argentinian lost by third-round TKO to Charles Jourdain in his UFC debut in March. Rojo was previously a standout in Combate Americas, compiling a 6-2 record for the promotion with all of those wins coming by way of knockout or submission.
