Jack Grealish on England’s win over Germany at Euro 2020

Jack Grealish has admitted that he was tempted to shoot before providing the assist for Harry Kane’s goal in England’s 2-0 win over Germany.

Raheem Sterling also scored in the famous victory, which booked the Three Lions place in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.

Grealish did not start the game but was introduced in the second half. It did not take him long to get involved either. Four minutes from time his cross found Kane unmarked in the box and the England skipper made no mistake, heading past Manuel Neuer to make certain of the victory.

However, according to Grealish, things might have gone differently.

“When it opened up at the end, when Luke gave me the ball, I was going to shoot! I’ve seen H in the box so I obviously crossed it for him,” he told the BBC after the game, via the Birmingham Mail.

He added: “It’s been hard for H [Kane]. He’s our most talked about player, probably our best player. It’s difficult because teams will double up on him and try to get him out of the game.”

Grealish is a favourite among the England support and once again there were chants throughout the game urging Gareth Southgate to bring him on. The Aston Villa man went to say that he has enjoyed the special attention during the tournament so far.

“I love it. It’s part of the game. If you’re getting talked about you’re obviously doing something well. I take it in my stride and it was an unbelievable feeling to have the fans sing my name. I’ve said before this is weird because I usually have these fans booing me,” he said.

“When they’re cheering me and singing my song there’s nothing more I want to do than pay them back with goals and assists. Hopefully my goal comes soon.”
