Declan Rice says England ‘proved people wrong’ vs Germany

Declan Rice has said that England ‘proved people wrong’ by defeating Germany in the Euro 2020 round of 16.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane secured a 2-0 win at Wembley which booked the Three Lions a place in the quarter-finals against either Sweden or Ukraine.

After a shaky start Rice had a great game, bouncing back from an early yellow card to show great control and discipline alongside Kalvin Phillips.

Speaking to the BBC after the game, Rice said: “It’s incredible. A lot of people when they looked at the group stage games had written us off. Complaints about the performances, not scoring enough goals. You read a lot of things but as players you put that to the back of your mind and want to prove people wrong.”

Rice also said that this current England side are history makers, with Germany previously proving a bogey team for the Three Lions at major tournaments.

“It’s history. In the press conferences this week all the players have been asked about the previous games against Germany but today we created our own bit of history,” he said.

“We’re here at Wembley. Gary Neville was saying last night that these don’t come around often and we’ve made the most of that opportunity. It was a pleasure to be out there on the pitch.”

Rice went on to lavish praise on goalscorers Sterling and Kane, while also revealing that belief is high in the Three Lions dressing room.

“Raz has just proved so many people wrong. He’s scoring so many goals for us, he’s crucial. H is made for the big occasion. He ran his socks into the ground and scored the goal that put the game to bed.

“We don’t want to get too ahead of ourselves because Saturday’s a massive game as well now. All I can say about today is the occasion, the fans, the players – we were up for it in the changing room. I’ve not been part of a team with togetherness like this. We’re all in it with each other. We really believe we’ve got the quality and with the tournament being in Wembley we believe we can keep progressing.”
