FC Barcelona reached an agreement with versatile forward Sergi Martinez that will keep him with the club through the end of the 2023-24 season, the club announced Monday. Martinez (2.02 meters, 22 years old) averaged 1.9 points and 2.1 rebounds in 26 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games last season. He helped Barcelona win the Spanish League and Cup double and reach the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Championship Game.
Martinez joined Barcelona in his early teens and played for the club’s youth squads, as well as for its second division team. He led U18 FC Barcelona to the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament title in 2016 with 17 points and 7 rebounds in the championship game against U18 Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade. Martinez made his first team debut in the 2019-20 campaign and became a full-time member of the squad last season. Martinez has also played for the Spanish national team at youth levels and helped it win silver medals at the 2019 U20 European Championships and the 2017 U18 European Championships.
